Pastel on paper 45 x 33 inches (frame) 016 Shravasti is one of the eight great pilgrimage sites associated with the life of Gautama Buddha. It is celebrated as the place where those who hold mistaken beliefs are publicly challenged and converted. The Buddha discoursed 25 rainy seasons there. Jetavana Grove is the name of the park where he performed these miracles, a site near the city of Shravasti, the capital of Koshala. The grove, which fell into ruins, has been excavated and partially restored. This work is based on a late 12th c. image from a book cover.
